Due to its false association with negative societies such as the Nazis and the Satanists, the Peace sign has been unfairly labeled.
No matter the negativity, the symbol continues to stand for it’s true definition. One of the most popular hippie symbols is the Peace sign.
It’s familiar form is easily distinguishable since its geometry and proportions are simple yet hard to forget.
Nevertheless, it’s form is well thought of; each line within its circular form stands for something.

A Brief Definition of the Symbol
The symbol of the peace sign interlaces closely with history.
It first came out as a nuclear disarmament symbol for the British. The symbol, designed by Gerald Holtom, first came out in 1958. The symbol stood for Nuclear Disarmament that was the semaphore for “N” and “D”.
A semaphore is a symbol produced by making signals with two flags held in each hand.

A semaphore is a symbol produced by making signals with two flags held in each hand.
In semaphore, the letter “N” is produced when a person points the two flags on either hand down to form an upside down “V.”
The semaphore for the letter “D” would be one flag hand pointed straight down and the other pointed up.
Both semaphores are combined together, thus forming the symbol within the circle.
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is a crucial moment in history since this came after the US dropped nuclear bombs on Japan in 1945.
The US, UK, and Soviet continued with the nuclear weaponry even after WWII.

CND formed in London in 1958 where around 4000 people joined the march alongside the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War; this number would increase to 10,000 in the next 3 days.
This is where the Peace symbol first made its appearance and will then stay until the 21st century.

Dark Associations concerning the Symbol
As mentioned earlier, the Peace sign has had negative associations that concerned the Nazis and the anti-Christ.
To go into further detail, there are some articles pointing out that the symbol closely resembled the emblem used by Hitler’s 3rd Panzer Division (1941 – 1945).

Although the symbol mostly depicted it to be standing upright (compared to the downward look of the peace sign), it is undeniably similar to one of the Nazi symbols.
When it came to religion, the peace sign also looked similar to the Nero cross.
The name came from Nero, the fifth and final Roman emperor who wanted to suppress Christianity.
He persecuted the Christians using this inverted cross that strongly looked like that of the Peace sign.

Regardless of these negative connotations, the symbol still has a strong positive following.
The world has been in existence for years with different and varied cultures. Such cultures contain symbols that would possibly look alike; one may represent positivity and the other would be the opposition.
Going Beyond the Symbol
No matter the dark associations, the Peace symbol will always be majorly representing peace.
The symbol may be given a new meaning, a rebirth into something more positive because, really, we would rather have a positive outcome from a negative start.

A symbol is merely there to represent. What matters more is the belief of the person wearing that symbol.
In the end, it all boils down to the positive.
The larger number sees the positive and lives the lifestyle.
The representation matters more; it goes beyond the symbol.
The popularity of the Peace sign is largely recognized among the hippie culture.
Holtom’s monochromatic symbol now evolved to a more colorful and playful symbol.
The hippies have now expressed their “love and peace” lifestyle through their actions, and their outfits.
