Igniting Your Creative Streak

Igniting Your Creative Streak

We are very happy to welcome our new blogger Rhiannon on our Yes We Vibe team! This week Rhiannon shares her insights on how to tap into your creativity.

I believe every person has the capacity to be creative.

In truth, we’re creating every day. With our minds, our words, our work, whether we choose to be creative or not. Think about it, if we didn’t have that creative spark, we wouldn’t be getting up and doing anything! Everything we do requires creator energy, and we are always creating new experiences and new thoughts.

Developing a more focused way to tap into creativity is a simple shift that can be started today, and I wanted to share the things I do every day to ignite that creative spark in my life.

Step 1: Change up your routine and do something new

You know that moment when you step off the plane in a completely new environment? Even in the airport, jet lagged and tired, the airport feels fresh, new, and full of possibility?

Think back to the last vacation you took and how it felt to be in a completely new place. Didn’t it light up a sense of something in you that anything is possible? There’s that renewed vibrancy and sparkle to life that we all need a taste of.

So, how do we invite more of this into our everyday life?

Well, I’ve experienced that taking smaller steps outside of your routine can have a similarly inspirational effect. Simple ways to break out of habit and do something in a new way can make a huge difference to how inspired we feel.

It can be as simple as going to a new place for coffee and making conversation with the barista. The point is to get out of your comfort zone and do something you wouldn’t normally do. Hop on a bus, talk to a stranger, laugh out loud in the elevator… anything to break up the routine and pull you out of your security blanket.

Step 2: Start a journal

Give this one a chance. I know a lot of people resist starting a journal because a.) it sounds like work, and b.) they think of themselves as not much of a writer.

Well, let me stop you right there before you strike this one of your list. A journal doesn’t have to be written. It doesn’t have to be anything but something that is memorable and inspiring for you, and something you revisit regularly. A recorded collection of pieces that sparked your interest. It could be collected movie tickets or flyers or cards you love. It could be an art journal filled with sketches and snippets of overheard conversations. The process of picking and choosing what goes into your journal will invite you to seek out inspiration in your everyday life.

 Step 3: Get moving

This one is pretty simple. Creativity is energy, and we can’t create much new energy if we’re feeling drained and stagnant. If you find yourself in a creative or energetic slump, hop off your seat and get walking, or head to a coffee shop, or nearby park. Hit up a dance class or a yoga mat. The rush of endorphins alone from this can entice you with new ways of looking at the world.

These are just a few simple ways to get started. Creativity, like any skill, takes commitment and an element of curious light-heartedness. But the more we pay attention to creative practices, the more our lives thrive with inspiration and new, better ways of looking at the world.

The benefits of creative living are not just personal, as in, you get to create beauty all around you. I would say, creativity is a form of sharing inspiration that uniquely strikes you with the world and you have the unique opportunity to express it in YOUR way.

15 years ago I created ‘Relish The Convenience, Personal Chef Service’ – using my talents & loving variety, I cook for a living & still love what I do :) I’m a hard working woman – so my plan every year is to venture to new places & do something I’ve never done before. So last August, I went to Kona, Hawaii and snorkeled with Manta Rays in a night dive and days later, snorkeled with Dolphins 5 x on a day dive! I was totally amazed & made noises in my snorkel when the Mantas were just inches from my face! They are the Butterflies of the Sea, gentle & 15-18 feet across. I will never forget this and the moments when hundreds of beautiful Dolphins were swimming around me. I was energized for weeks!
